Will Lifting Make Me Look Like a Bodybuilder?

Updated: May 16, 2020

I get asked this question by women all the time. There is a common misconception that strength training leads to looking "bulky" or "manly". The reality is that it takes extreme dedication and planning for female bodybuilders to look the way they do. You won't lift weights one day and wake up the next morning with huge arms. That's just not how it works. It frustrates me because lifting provides incredible benefits and many females shy away from it. I'm here to tell you to pick up those weights and be confident using them!

I started lifting weights in college when I had to stop running for a time due to a knee injury. I'd spent years thinking that running and core workouts were all I needed. That thought is what ultimately led to my knee problems. I didn't realize that strength training not only helps my running performance, but prevents injuries. Now I regularly lift throughout the week and enjoy it just as much as my cardio days.

If I haven't convinced you yet, here's a list of scientifically proven benefits of strength training:

1. Weight management

2. Stronger bones

3. Increased muscle tone and strength

4. Improved balance and coordination

5. Lower risk of injury

6. Better flexibility and mobility

7. Stress relief
