S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Updated: May 16, 2020

We all have goals from personal to professional. Think of yours right now. Write it down. Read it a few times. Is it specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.)? Setting goals in this format gives you control of your situation and increases the chances that you will achieve them. Taking the time to write it down makes your goal more real to you and also serves as a reminder to keep you motivated throughout your journey. Don't keep them bottled up. You should be proud of your goals and deserve to achieve them! Now let's get started.

Specific

What exactly do you want to achieve? How do you want to achieve it? Be as specific as possible and really think about the details. The more time you spend on this section, the clearer your objective will be.

Measurable

What will reaching your goal look like? How will it feel to you? Making your goal measurable allows you to see the progress you're making in reaching it. It's easier to stay motivated when you can celebrate little achievements along the way. Your goal will also be more manageable.

Attainable

Is this goal attainable? Be honest with yourself. Do you have the time or resources necessary to reach it? This doesn't mean you shouldn't be ambitious. Set high goals for yourself, but write out your plan to get there.

Relevant

Why do you want to achieve this goal? Why is it important to you? Don't spend time on something that doesn't matter to you. Find what you're passionate about and go for it!

Time-bound

Give yourself a deadline. A goal that isn't time-bound is much less likely to be achieved; it makes it easier to put it off or make excuses. Set a realistic date at which you'd like to complete your goal. Of course things happen and you may need to make adjustments, but don't let that get in the way of you crossing the finish line.
